difference between "anrufen" and "telefonieren"

What is the difference between “telefonieren” and “anrufen”?

I noticed that many of my students get confused when it comes to using the verb ” to call” in German. They are not sure when to use “telefonieren” and “anrufen”. So I decided to write this short post to explain the difference.  You can also download the pdf with exercises to help you practice both verbs.

telefonieren mit (Dativ) – to talk on the phone with someone

anrufen (Akkusativ)– to call someone (on phone)

“Telefonieren” and “anrufen” have a similar meaning, but they are used in a slightly different way. As you see, they even use a different case. “Telefonieren” is used with preposition “mit”, which requires the Dative preposition, so we use Dative case after the verb “telefonieren”.

Anrufen” is used without preposition and the nouns/pronouns take the Accusative case.  Also, “an” is a separable prefix, so you need to be careful when you conjugate “anrufen” in Present tense. Here are some examples:

Ich rufe dich an. – I am calling you.

Wann rufst du mich an? – When are you going to call me?

Du hast mich gestern angerufen. – You called me yesterday.

Haben Sie mich gestern angerufen? – Did you call me yesterday? (formal)

Die Lehrerin hat mich angerufen. –  The teacher called me.

Ich habe dich am Montag angerufen. – I called you on Monday.

Ich rufe meine Mutter an. – I am calling my mother.

Anrufen” indicates that someone called someone, but we don’t know if the actual conversation on the phone happened.

Telefonieren” describes the act of talking on the phone, so in this case, the conversation always happens:

Ich telefoniere. – I am talking on the phone (now).

Sie hat mit der Lehrerin telefoniert. – She talked to the teacher on the phone.

Ich telefoniere mit meiner Schwester. – I am talking to my sister on the phone.

Wann hast du mit deinen Eltern telefoniert? – When did you talk on the phone with your parents?

Ich telefoniere mit meinen Großeltern fast jedes Wochenende. – I talk with my grandparents on the phone almost every weekend.
